Buffalo Ribeye Flatbreads

Grilled Nicky Farms bison ribeye with grilled flatbread; a gremolata of carrot tops, mint, and lovage flowers (all from the garden), lemon juice and garlic; quick-pickled ramps and green strawberries; opal basil flowers, parsley flowers, and salad burnet from the garden; purple cauliflower and carrot

Miyazaki Style Sushi Salad

The boy wanted Spaghetti-Os, so I fixed myself a Miyazaki-style sushi salad (krab, iceberg, kewpie) bolstered by a little omelet and cucumber-hijiki sunomono, plus a little rice (shrimp-nori furikake) and miso. It might look light, but I got all turnt on @gueropdx for lunch today

Leftovers Surprise

Had some leftover creamed peas and favas from @laurelhurstmarket (and the cream, spinach, and pancetta left from the mussels), so I did what I do best: hacked the shit out of that stuff into a whole new meal! Cooked a little orecchiette, Vietnamese melon, bolting

Rhubarb-Purple Carrot Marmalade

Was inspired during a conversation with @plumtreejam about rhubarb last week; my wheels got spinning about carrot marmalade and things of that springtime ilk, and I crafted a small (seven ha'pint) batch of rhubarb-purple carrot marmalade with ginger (orange and lemon zest/juice for extra acidity).

Yo Dawg I Heard You Like Flowers

Yo dawg I heard you like flowers So I made a beautiful bowl of egg flower soup with rich homemade chicken stock, vermilion-yolked backyard eggs, fresh arugula and garlic chives from the garden, and some sweet frozen corn kernels, and then since I heard you

Vegetarian burrito in a bowl

I eat a lot of variations on "tofu-veggie stir-fry" because it's fast, cheap, nutritious, and filling. Also, because I was a hippie in the 90s. This one is burrito-flavored, with @tillamook pepper jack and a creamy dressing of sour cream stirred together with homemade tomatillo

Curried Pumpkin Soup

The best thing about having a compost heap is not the smug satisfaction of reducing your household waste to a mere 10 gallons a month, or seeing healthy organisms thrive in your soil, or the idea that the nutrient cycle may be so poetically expressed

Pizza Bolognese

Sorry for the dead air for the past…oh, my. It’s been a month. I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire right now (including some projects for print), and this just fell off my radar. But it’s summer! And the garden is full! This

Roasted Salsa Verde

I love salsa verde. Throw it into a pot with a pork shoulder and you’ve got chili verde, ready for stuffing peppers or enchiladas. Mix it with crème fraîche and use it as a sauce for grilled fish. Or just eat it in a warm tortilla

Smoked Cod Cakes with Napa Cabbage Slaw

I love fish cakes. There’s some casual thing about them, all getting sand in your shoes and an itchy sunburn on your shoulders, needing Noxzema and iced tea. Their beachiness could be as literal as the fact that cod comes from the ocean (our local chilly
